Abstract

Managers face conflicting demands in international business that are deployed as dilemmas, dialectics, and paradoxes into organizational life. Different theories explore how managers cope with them, but they have not sufficiently discussed in international business research. This inductive study uncovers the changes in the managers’ sensemaking structures when facing the duality “standardization/adaptation” over time, and is a first step in connecting the literature on management dualities with the literature specialized in international business contexts. We contribute to theory on both fields with insights on how managers develop complex structures to interpret multiple dualities and use cognitive and emotional processes to connect them with concrete actions of teams.
