Abstract

Family engagement and intervention have been associated with improved mental health treatment outcomes for patients of all ages. However, methods by which to prepare psychiatrists to effectively work with families have presented a challenge. Early career psychiatrists reported that family skills were the least taught during residency and among the skills most needed after graduation. To teach a circumscribed, clinically practical family skill with which to more effectively manage intrafamilial conflict, the NewYork-Presbyterian Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Training Program developed a “catching the bullet” workshop, based on emotionally focused therapy (EFT).
