Abstract

ABSTRACT This article describes a quantitative study to determine factors related to attaining comfort in managing group conflict, realizing that knowledge of conflict management theory and technique does not necessarily produce competence among social group workers. Subjects were BSW and MSW graduates who had previously taken a course in group dynamics. On a 17-item questionnaire, they were asked to disclose whether their comfort level had changed once employed in the social service field and what factors were related to either an increase or decrease in comfort when addressing group conflict. A 58% response rate yielded valuable information, suggesting direction for academic curricula and field training for social workers engaging in group work.
