Abstract

Eating disorders are a complex combination of physical and mental issues and they affect 1.6 million people in the UK. The two most common conditions are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, and both can have serious health consequences. The frequent vomiting associated with bulimia (and sometimes, anorexia) can damage the teeth, potentially leading to tooth loss. Signs include changes in shape, colour, and length of teeth. The pain associated with the dental consequences of vomiting may prompt patients to visit their dentist. Therefore, dental care professionals are in a key position to identify eating disorders. Management consists of preventing further tooth damage while the illness is ongoing and repairing damage once it is under control.
