Abstract

This case study profiles the managers and executives of a multinational manufacturing firm. The firm had recently been involved in several lawsuits brought by women and minority employees who alleged that the organization was involved in discriminatory practices. The suit resulted in an out-of-court settlement and the establishment of a consent decree. The plaintiffs returned to work, having requested little in monetary damages for themselves. Instead, the consent decree required the organization to take action to change the organizational culture, to eliminate discriminatory practices, and to establish educational programs and policy changes designed to foster a workplace more supportive of diversity. As a result, the organization hired a well-respected independent consultant who was highly regarded for her work in organizational assessment of workplace diversity initiatives.
