Abstract

Skin diseases form an enormous part of general practice work. It is estimated that between 10 and 33% of the population will be suffering from some skin problem at any one time and that skin diseases comprise about 10% of consultations with GPs (All Party Parliamentary Group on Skin, 1997). The GP is able to manage the majority of these problems but a proportion will be referred for specialist opinion at the hospital. Some of these will be for the purposes of diagnosis and advice regarding treatment, while others will be for the management of those with chronic problems or exacerbations of conditions such as eczema and psoriasis (All Party Parliamentary Group on Skin, 1997).
