Abstract

There are a series of plaques let into the wall where the Rue de Rivoli flows into the Place de la Concorde in the centre of Paris to commemorate young Frenchmen killed in the liberation of August 1944. These plaques speak proudly but vaguely of heroic sacrifice or valiant conduct, except the last which is different. It speaks precisely of a young tank commander from Leclerc’s Second Armoured Division who fell but only after having attacked and destroyed a Tiger tank.
