Abstract
Abstract This chapter examines the management of visitors inside park boundaries by reviewing systems approaches specifically designed to enhance visitor experiences and control negative impacts. The discussion begins with several principles that are fundamental to managing visitors. The next sections examine the ideas of diversity of recreation opportunities and zoning as a park management tool. The "Limits of Acceptable Change" system of managing visitor impacts and opportunities is then described. The emphasis in this chapter is on understanding principles, concepts and rationales for visitor management systems so that specific techniques and approaches may be adapted to local situations. A case study of the Bob Marshall Wilderness (USA) is presented.
