Abstract

Although most asthmatic patients should be referred to an allergist for evaluation, many return to their primary physician for symptomatic treatment and administration of allergens. Symptomatic treatment is based on drugs that relax smooth muscle, promote expectoration, and suppress tissue edema. Immunotherapy should be used in asthma even if the disease is mild. Steroids also have a place in the treatment of this common form of respiratory allergy.
