Abstract

Abstract
Renal diseases range from inherited and metabolic/storage derangements to acquired disorders as diverse as immunological, metabolic, neoplastic and infective. Many 'renal' diseases (particularly immunological and metabolic problems) have a systemic component, and patients may therefore present with symptoms referring to another organ or system. This can lead to misdiagnosis, diagnostic delay and potential harm; for example, in a patient suffering tiredness, muscle stiffness, epistaxis and nasal blockage, Wegener's granulomatosis may not be diagnosed until overt renal impairment has occurred.
