With advances in critical care medicine, many lives are extended through the use of artificial airways and ventilators. Many patients today need long term airway support and become ventilator dependent. Postintubation tracheal stenosis is a serious life-threatening complication of endotracheal (ET) tube intubation or tracheostomies. Although have been several methods for resolving these complications has been devised, not all benefit equally from their use. Herein we report case involving a 77-year-old female patient with prolonged intubation who faced near-death condition resulting from postintubation tracheal stenosis that occurred when a tracheostomy tube was dislodged while the ET tube was being changed. An extended length tube was applied to the patient during a second tracheostomy This allowed airway patency and vital stability.
