Abstract

One hundred sixteen penetrating wounds of the neck were seen at the Martland Hospital-New Jersey Medical School. Sixty-two per cent of the patients had one or more major structural injuries. Forty-three per cent of the patients without major organ damage had clinical findings to indicate immediate surgery. The mortality was 3.5 per cent. Gunshot wounds are potentially more lethal and merit particular care and aggressive therapy. From the experience in this series, we are convinced that immediate exploration of all penetrating neck wounds is the safest means of management.
