Abstract

Introduction: Paediatric mandibular fractures are uncommon and continue to pose a challenge for the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. The incidence of maxillofacial fractures in children under the age of 5 is reported as < 1%. Factors significant to the developing mandible must be considered when weighing up risks of surgical intervention. Surgical treatment of children under the age of 12 is less favoured due to the risks to ongoing mandibular growth processes and developing tooth buds. Authors describe disruption to the mandibular periosteal envelope may result in adverse effects on growth, thus closed reduction is preferred. Operative management should involve minimal manipulation.
