Abstract

Optical networks are playing an increasingly important part in meeting the demand for communication bandwidth. Especially since the introduction of wavelength division multiplexing techniques optical network management has received increasing attention. This paper describes optical network management in terms of an architectural framework that can be applied not only to optical line systems but also to more complex optical networks. This is placed in the context of operational trials conducted by BT on two long-haul routes.
