Abstract

Background: Massive splenomegaly lacks a consensus definition. It can be a spleen of more than 1 kg in mass or more than 22cm in length. Splenectomy is indicated for several conditions: splenic rupture (traumatic), hematological disorders (red blood cells, hemoglobin, white blood cells, platelets), bone marrow disorders, cysts, tumors, infections, etc. Splenectomy for lymphoproliferative disorders can be effective for symptomatic splenomegaly but significant postoperative and post-splenectomy risks must be taken into account, specially in this complex patient population.
