Abstract

Fibrous dysplasia is a developmental condition which normal bone is replaced by excessive proliferation of cellular fibrous connective tissue intermixed with irregular bony trabeculae. The predilection age is in the second decade. The radiographic characteristic is ground-glass pattern, no apparent boundaries, and diminished periodontal ligament spaces. In this report, we presented a 7-year-old girl who was accidentally diagnosed as fibrous dysplasia during dental examination. After CT scan and bony biopsy with minor osteoplasty, the diagnosis was monostotic fibrous dysplasia. Since fibrous dysplasia was a slowly-growing disease and rarely shows malignant change, we suggested the patient kept regular follow-up instead of aggressive treatments. Other treatments such as caries restoration or orthodontic tooth movement could be performed as usual without specific considerations.
