Abstract

The management of inflammatory rheumatic diseases in patients with asimultaneous or previous malignant disease is associated with complex questions. Difficulties and possible solutions in the interpretation of meaningful studies are presented. Recommendations in guidelines on this topic are discussed. National registries and health insurance databases were examined with respect to the risk of tumor recurrence under disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs; however, these analyses mainly refer to tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors and rituximab. Data on tumor incidence and, if available, risk of tumor recurrence are summarized for commonly used disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs. Finally, an attempt is made to formulate proposals for rheumatological treatment in patients with ahistory of malignancy.
