Abstract

Inappropriate sinus tachycardia (IST) is a condition characterised by unusually fast heart rates at rest and/or minimal physical activity or both. The mechanisms of IST are not well understood and individuals suffering with the condition can present with an array of incapacitating symptoms. Although IST is a benign arrhythmia, it can have profound effects on quality of life. Diagnosis is a process of elimination and treatment may include drugs, lifestyle adjustment, and in some circumstances catheter ablation. Cardiac nurses should consider IST as a diagnosis in patients presenting with incessant palpitation and tachycardia in the presence of an otherwise normal ECG.
