Abstract
The treatment of hyperlipidemia is desirable, especially in patients with a family history of premature ischemic heart disease, but only after the specific type of hyperlipoproteinemia has been determined. Secondary causes of hyperlipoproteinemia should be sought and eliminated. Dietary regulation remains the primary therapeutic approach; adjunctive chemotherapy is indicated only when dietary control is unsuccessful. Several drugs will reduce lipid levels, but the long-term effects of these drugs are unknown. (<i>JAMA</i>230:1683-1691, 1974)
