Abstract

Abstract Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease is the most common renal cystic disease which causes end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in adults. In Canada, the prevalence of polycystic kidney disease (PKD) among registered ESRD patients was 6.3 per cent (n = 1205) at the end of 1991 (Canadian Organ Replacement Registry; CORR 1993). PKD occurred in 5.3 per cent (n = 135) of new patients starting ESRD therapy during 1991, an incidence virtually unchanged since the previous decade (CORR 1993). Prevalence rates are similar throughout the world, although it has been reported that the disease is rare in Africa (Habte and Abraha 1983), and may be less common in American blacks than whites (Torres et al. 1985).
