Abstract

This article reviews current advances in the understanding of eczema, a common chronic inflammatory and itchy skin condition where there are subtle defects in the protein structure and function of the skin barrier. Parent and carer education in management and use of treatments is key and, as most children develop eczema under the age of 4 years, health visitors are well placed to help and support families with education and practical demonstrations about the use of emollients and topical corticosteroids. Food allergy in young children with moderate or severe atopic eczema should be considered in the presence of faltering growth and gastrointestinal symptoms.
