Abstract

Summary This questionnaire-based project ascertained the views of physiotherapists, general practitioners and teachers currently caring for patients within the Northern Region of England on the community management of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Response rates were achieved of 96% for physiotherapists, 87% for schools and 42% for GPs. The following broad conclusions were drawn: 1 1. All groups agree that physiotherapists play an extremely important role during every stage of the disease, in both physical and psychological management. 2 In the very early stages of the disease GPs are vital in ensuring an early diagnosis. However, awareness among GPs of the early signs of the disease still needs to be raised. 3 Many teachers are not aware of the possibility that boys with DMD may have learning difficulties. 4 All professionals are uncertain about management in the late stage of the condition and require education about the early symptoms of nocturnal hypoventilation.
