Abstract

ISO Technical Committee 97, Sub Committee 21 has now registered, as Draft Proposals for international standards, a Framework for Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Management and Common Management Information Services. This paper reviews the current status of standards for the management of distributed communicating systems, areas of current concern and the challenges which lie ahead. The paper first considers specific standardisation issues concerning communications management then considers the further requirements for management in a distributed information processing environment and explores the complementary set of open system standards which are needed.
