Abstract

Constipation in infants and young children is a common problem, and health visitors have a key role to play in early identification and treatment, to prevent it from becoming chronic with the development of faecal impaction. In 2014, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published quality standards with clear recommendations on the assessment and treatment of constipation in children, recommending the use of macrogols as first-line therapy. This article will give an overview of the common causes of constipation in children aged 0–5 years and discuss management of the problem and associated problems, such as stool withholding, as outlined in the NICE recommendations.
