Abstract
Complications are something all surgeons experience, but they would like to have fewer and they prefer not to talk about them. However, much can be learned from discussing complications. It is unusual to find surgeons presenting their complications at meetings, writing about them in journals, or discussing them in books. While not all complications are avoidable, many can be prevented. The ability to avoid complications and obtain a good result in spite of a complication, separates the superior surgeon from the pack.
