Abstract

This section covers diagnosis and management of asthma, type 1 diabetes mellitus, epilepsy and mental health in children. In this part of the chapter, we have included some common illnesses in children that we have seen poorly managed and that are common in children, especially those who are displaced and live in conditions with poor shelter, food and a lack of medications. Recognition and appropriate management of chronic diseases in children is essential to prevent acute complications and long-term adverse health outcomes. Management should be multi-faceted, including patient and caregiver/guardian education, lifestyle and dietary measures, monitoring and pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical measures. Careful identification of common illnesses in childhood will reduce avoidable mortality and morbidity. Clinicians must champion access to essential drugs for management of conditions such as asthma, epilepsy and diabetes.
