Abstract

Patients with diabetes mellitus have an increased risk for the development of cardiovascular diseases. The presence of both comorbidities has amajor impact not only on the prognosis of the patients but is also decisive for the implementation of evidence-based treatment strategies for reduction of the cardiovascular risk. The new guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) were published in 2023 and provide clear recommendations for the management of cardiovascular diseases in patients with diabetes. The most relevant aspects of these guidelines are summarized in the following overview article.
