Abstract

The most frequent malignancy related to the lips is squamous cell carcinoma (95%), with the lower lip more commonly involved relative to the upper lip (90%:10%).1 Typically, squamous cell carcinoma originates in the red lip (mucosa), whereas basal cell carcinoma originates in the white lip (skin). Unlike other squamous cell carcinomas of the upper aerodigestive tract, squamous cell carcinoma of the lip is thought to be related to sun exposure. Management of T1 and T2 squamous cell carcinoma of the lip typically involves complete surgical excision with postoperative radiation therapy used in more advanced stage lesions.
