Abstract

AbstractThe treatment options for post-esophagectomy leakage remain a matter of debate and lack standardization even at individual facilities. The principles of managing postoperative leakage depend on the location of the anastomotic leakage, defect size, the time elapsed until treatment after the occurrence of leakage, and the patient’s physiological condition. Strategies include conservative management (involving strict restrictions on oral intake, systemic antibiotics, and appropriate drainage), endoscopic techniques, and surgical exploration. Although there is no consensus guideline, there has been a progressive shift in treatment strategies from an aggressive surgical approach toward more conservative management and endoscopic interventions. This review presents an overview of effective therapeutic options for postoperative leakage after esophagectomy.KeywordsEsophagectomyLeakageEndoscopic management
