Abstract

Although mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) represents the most common salivary gland malignancy, it is rare as a primary bronchial tumor. MEC of the lung represents only 0.1 to 0.2 percent of primary lung cancers and most arise in the larger main or lobar bronchi. The typical presentation is cough and/or hemoptysis secondary to large airway irritation or obstruction. This tumor has been reported in patients of all ages, although many are younger than 30 years of age. We present a 22 year old male patient with a left mainstem bronchial MEC and discuss the biologic behavior of this unusual primary lung tumor as it relates to management considerations.
