Abstract

Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings includes abstracts of all papers and symposia presented at the annual conference, plus 6-page abridged versions of the “Best Papers” accepted for inclusion in the program (approximately 10%). Papers published in the Proceedings are abridged because presenting papers at their full length could preclude subsequent journal publication. The paper "Xenophon's Anabais and the Strategic Importance of Culture: An Examination Through the Use of Gareth Morgan's Metaphors," by Kenneth E. Aupperle examines an ancient historical event that has profound implications regarding the role of organizational culture. Xenophon's Anabasis documents the successful retreat of a Greek army trapped in Persia. The paper "Historical Continuity and Change in the Organization of Work," by Bernard M. Bass is a brief review of the history of the organization of work, a history that parallels the development of civilization. Both continuity and change are apparent in the role of the organization of work in society and its management. The paper "In the Beginning: A History of Women in Management" explores why women's managerial activities are not addressed in the management history literature. Social and economic circumstances dictated that only men's activities were chronicled and analyzed. Although, large numbers of women worked, few were considered professional managers prior to the 1960s despite the nature of their endeavors.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails Vol. 1993, No. 1 Permissions Metrics in the past 12 months History Published online 13 December 2017 Published in print 1 August 1993 InformationCopyright of Academy of Management Journal is the property of Academy of Management and its content may not be copied or emailed to multiple sites or posted to a listserv without the copyright holder’s express written permission.
