ICHTHYOSIS is the term used to describe a group of hereditary disorders in which the outer horny layer of the skin is abnormal and has been likened in appearance to the scales of lower vertebrates.Many patients experience lifelong disfigurement as well as considerable discomfort from the abnormally thickened horny layer. In addition, thermal regulation, water balance and growth and development may be adversely affected, depending on the type and severity of the disease.
