Abstract

Black cockatoos Calyptorhynchus spp have been uncommon in European zoos because of Australian wildlife export restrictions but recently several of these birds have been loaned to European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) member zoos after their confiscation by national government officials. Management guidelines, based on the literature and on a questionnaire sent to zoos which have maintained black cockatoos, are being developed to aid zoos with little or no experience with these species. Questionnaire responses were received from 15 zoos (50% of those surveyed). Results from the survey and information from the literature relevant to management guidelines are presented here, although information which is included in the guidelines that can be easily found in other publications is not included.
