Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to introduce management and control systems for raw materials like iron ore in steel works. An ore blending plan is mainly described, which is most important for stable running of blast furnaces. The ore blending problem is to determine the kind and the amount of ores charged into blast furnaces and sintering plants so as to minimize the variance of product's chemical ingredients under some restrictions. This problem is formulated into a large scale mixed integer programming. A new practical man-machine method using both decomposition technique and linear programming hierachically has been developed in order to solve it efficiently. It has been installed in the management and control systems for raw materials at our steel works and has contributed a lot of the reduction of chemical ingredients' variance.
