Abstract

My text is taken from the sixteenth century hymn of Martin Luther: “For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe.” I am not about to talk of stone, or tumor, or syphilis, or even about the devil. My topic is Fear. Fear is our ancient foe, as real today as in prehistoric or medieval times. There is no reference in the urologic literature to fear, yet it is the disease that we encounter more frequently and in more varied forms than any other. Not a single one of our patients is without it in greater or lesser degree as he enters our offices. Do you doubt me? Why does a sufferer seek out one of us? Because he wants an operation and has heard of our great skill? Hardly! He has a pain, or cannot urinate properly, or sees blood every time he does so. He knows something is the matter and is afraid it is going to cost him dearly. He is scared to death whether,he says so or not, even as you or I would be.
