Abstract

The history of the conversation published below is the following. Heinz Plavius, one of the leading critics in the German Democratic Republic, came to Frunze to interview, for the Weimarer Beitrage, one of the Soviet writers most popular in the GDR. It can be stated that Chingiz Aitmatov's writings are as well known in that country as in ours. A single publishing house, the largest of all, Volk und Welt, has brought out eight of his works in a total of 438,700 copies. These include a splendidly produced two-volume collection. In addition, Volk und Welt has licensed Aitmatov's books for publication by Reklam, Verlag der Nation, and Kunderbuch-Verlag, in a total of 760,000 copies.
