Abstract

ABSTRACT A forestry operation the size of Usutu requires a high investment in men and machines. For a pulpwood rotation, the re-establishment period is considered to be about 24 months. Re-establishment is divided into planting preparation, planting and primary spacing. The methods used in determining and monitoring labour requirements are briefly discussed. Whenever possible mechanical methods have been considered in re-establishment forestry. These have concentrated on the slash disposal aspect, as all slash burning has been stopped, and to some extent on primary spacing of natural regeneration. The continued importance of man in re-establishment forestry is acknowledged with the conclusion that the silviculture worker is also in need of training.
