Abstract

Oestrone and oestradiol-17β concentrations in mammary and uterine venous and aortal blood were determined by radioimmunoassay (RIA) in six Black-White cows from Day 7 prepartum to Day 1 postpartum. In four cows, the plasma levels of prostaglandin F 2α in the caudal superficial epigastric vein and the abdominal aorta were established by RIA around the same time. The mean oestradiol-17β concentration in mammary venous blood was higher than that in uterine and aortal blood. The mean levels of oestrone in aortal and mammary venous plasma were similar, but lower than those in the uterine vein. The mean concentration of PGF 2α was greater in mammary venous drainage than in aortal blood from Day 7 to Day 2 prepartum. The present experiment shows that oestrone is not secreted by the udder in cows and confirms the mammary secretion of oestradiol-17β and PGF 2α near parturition.
