Abstract

The main airm of the authors is to present in 3 parts the role of wet nurses in infant feeding and upbringing in Poland sińce ancient tirmes to the present. The first part of this study describes wet nursing in ancient Greek, Roman, Muslirm and Jewish cultures, as certain beliefs, principles and customs they developed influenced also social behaviour in contemporary Poland. In the second part, the authors describe history of wet nursing in the lands of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth until the early 19th century. The third part will continue to describe the Polish history of wet nursing to the present tirme.
