Abstract

This case study describes a patient who had a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and was admitted to the hospital four years later with massive weight loss, gross bilateral lower extremity edema, and incisional drainage from a recent surgery. Despite successful weight loss, a comprehensive nutrition assessment revealed poor eating habits, noncompliance with vitamins and minerals, and excessive ice consumption. Due to her malnutrition, a gastrostomy tube was placed and the patient was discharged home on a diet with supplemental tube feedings.
