Abstract

CARDIAC failure has been a serious problem in the treatment of kwashiorkor in Uganda1, precipitated because of anaemia and aggravated by haemodilution resulting from an excessive sodium intake. Heart complications have also been suspected in Mexico2, in Jamaica3 and in Guatemala4. Pathological evidence of heart damage has been reported both in man5,6 and in monkeys7.
