Abstract

Proliferative verrucous leukoplakia (PVL) is a rare and enigmatic pathology characterized by multiple nonhomogeneous white plaques of slow growth and high rate of malignant transformation. We presented 3 cases of PVL that underwent transformation to squamous cell carcinoma after a long period of treatment and clinical follow-up. All patients were female, from 45 to 73 years old at the diagnosis of PVL, not smokers or alcoholics, and had no symptoms. In the clinical examination, multiple white plaques with rough surfaces and undefined limits were observed. They affected palate (2 cases), tongue (3 cases), buccal floor (2 cases), alveolar ridge (2 cases), and buccal mucosa (3 cases). Malignant transformation occurred, on average, after 8 years of the first examination. Treatment of squamous cell carcinoma consisted of resection surgery (2 cases) and radiotherapy (1 case). The patients have been monitored on regular follow-up.
