Abstract

Malignant adnexal tumors are rare primary cutaneous neoplasms that show differentiation towards sweat glands and ducts, hair follicles and sebaceous glands. Their behavior ranges from locally destructive to aggressive with distant metastasis and mortality. Due to the rarity of malignant adnexal tumors few comprehensive studies exist and their full biological potential is only poorly understood. Accordingly, few skin adnexal carcinomas have been studied genetically to date. This article provides an overview of the current knowledge on skin adnexal carcinomas. The article is separated according to differentiation into sweat gland carcinomas, malignant tumors with hair follicular differentiation and sebaceous carcinoma.
