Abstract

Mature cystic teratomas are benign ovarian germ cell tumours, comprised of tissues from at least two of three germ layers, and constitute 10–20% of all ovarian neoplasms. A variety of malignant tumours may arise from within mature cystic teratomas, though this occurs relatively infrequently, in 0.2–1.8% of cases. Of these, malignant melanomas occur very rarely.
