Abstract

Germany's contribution to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), with 1,000 soldiers as a ›peacekeeping force,‹ is currently the largest German military deployment abroad - and at the same time one of the most dangerous in the history of the UN. At first glance, Germany's military involvement appears to be a strong signal by the German government to assume more responsibility in international security issues. However, a closer analysis shows that the German military deployment is reactive, hesitant, and subject to national reservations that could jeopardize MINUSMA's success.
