Abstract

Abstract This research seeks to contribute to the understanding of the problem of motivation to the regular practice of physical and sporting activities. To do so, we analyze the metaphorical use of the word “malhar”, which, in Brazil, is associated with physical exercise. One hundred ninety four people participated in the “free association method”, by saying from one to three words or expressions that came immediately to their minds, from the inductor term “malhar”. We also conducted ten interviews. We conclude that there is a correlation between professional performance in physical education and the problem investigated. The demand for performance produces a negative (unconscious) affection that operates in the body as a force (tiredness, discouragement, and suffering).
