Abstract

A photocurable crosslinked matrix forming mixture of bismaleimide and divinyl ether monomers has been used to produce polymer dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) with fast optical switching times and excellent transmission characteristics. The use of a divinyl ether with a urethane space group resulted in effective scattering of light in the off state and reasonably high transmission in the on state. The resin required no addition of an external initiator; consequently the PDLCs are relatively stable to artificial weathering. The maleimide/vinyl ether resins systems described herein have the potential for serving as non-yellowing, rapid cure resin matrices for photocurable PDLCs.
