Abstract
•During the Great Recession, a one-percentage point increase in the male unemployment rate is associated with a 0.8% increase in the child maltreatment report rate.•During the Great Recesion, a one-percentage point increase in the female employment popluation ratio is associated with a 0.8% increase in the child maltreatment report rate.•During the Great Recession, a one-percentage point increase in the male unemployment rate is associated with a 1.7% increase in the substantitation rate.•During the Great Recession, a one-percentage point increase in the female employment population ratio is associated with a 1.1% increase in the substantiation rate.
