Abstract

Background: In 2006 female breast cancer had the highest incidence of all types of cancer in Austria. This disease is well known and has been object of many clinical studies for years. Of all breast cancers male breast cancer (mbc) incidence is 1% and increasing. The carcinoma of the male breast has many similarities to female breast cancer, but the disease has different genetic and pathologic features. The current treatment regimens for mbc are largely based on accepted guidelines for female breast cancer. Materials and methods: We reviewed the literature focusing on risk factors, clinical features, histopathology and the different therapeutic approaches of mbc. In addition we would like to present 3 cases of mbc who were introduced and treated in our department 2006. Results: We aim to present the standard of knowledge concerning aetiology and method of treatment and report our cases with particular emphasis on clinical management, histology and treatment in our department. Conclusion: Because the incidence of mbc is increasing, we think that there is need to focus more on this theme and to become more sensitized.
