Abstract

Inborn Errors of Metabolism (IEM) are a group of complex diseases. Many of them lead to abnormalities of brain functions, resulting in neurological or psychiatric symptoms. We have chosen to highlight seven IEM related to psychiatry; all of them are treatable. These disorders are among the most common and are frequently associated with psychiatric signs (20 to 70 % of cases). After addressing disorders of homocysteine metabolism, of the urea cycle, Wilson's disease, cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis, Niemann-Pick type C and acute porphyria, we will discuss the interest for psychiatrists for general organicity. Finally, the criteria for atypical features of psychosis are presented to help the psychiatrist to search for these IEM based on clinical psychiatric symptoms.
